Technique: 120 & 135 films are scanned using a professional scanner to retrieve as much information and detail from the original negatives/slides as possible. 'Treatment' is applied to re-create my 'vision' of the original composition. Only 'treatment' which can be created in the darkorom is applied digitally such as: brightness / contrast / tonality / vignetting and sometimes blurring. My preference for digital treatment over darkroom processing is due to consistent replication and a greater level of control. The minimal treatment allows me to create imagery that brings out the unique charecteristics of film, while trying to remain faithful to the art of analogue photography. Although digital photography has become widespread, my preference is for manual focus film photography because it forces me to slow down and get more involved, more connected with the composition. |

My digital imagery has become increasingly non-objective with no recognisable subject matter, the subject being the imagery itself. Non-objective art explores the potential of abstraction, the shape, depth, colours, tones, lines and texture, but does not try to pin down a subject. This lets the viewer respond emotionally to the piece. |
